Modern Log Cabin Quilting

I'm happy to have the chance to review a copy of Modern Log Cabin Quilting, by Susan Beal. This beautiful book includes a brief history of the log cabin quilt, a section about choosing fabrics and materials, a quilt making basics section, and 25 patchwork projects. The projects are broken down into 3 sections: Quilts, Home Decor and Bags & Beyond. There are so many great ideas of what you can create using the log cabin block as your jumping off point. My personal favorite from the book is the quilt on the cover. I was smitten at first sight. After reading through the pattern, I think it's genius! I'm excited to make my own. It's simple and stunning...just my kind of quilt. :)

A few other things I loved in the book:
This inspiration quilt....made in 1865. Kinda looks like our modern quilts, eh?
I loved the simplicity of design and bold colors in the Straight Furrows quilt.
The starry night pillow is great, too.
The kind folks at Crown Publishing are offering up a free copy of the book to one of my readers. If you would like to win a copy, leave a comment in this post. In your comment, let me know what you are up to today. Personally, I'm going to go run some errands and pick up ingredients to make a huge kettle of soup. Yes, it's May 2 and it was SNOWING this morning! I'm none too happy about it, as you could probably imagine! So, I'm going to make some soup, hunker down with some quilting and try to make the best of it. After all, I do have a few quilts to work on. ;)

Happy Monday to you!

Oh, and thanks for all the birthday wishes for my daughter. I appreciate each and every one of them!

I just left a "cat" quilt to get long arm quilted by Kathy at The Tamarack Shack. This is for my three year old granddaughter for Xmas. I won't mind doing the binding, love that part. Yes, we have had snow off and on too, but can count our blessings as our weather hasn't been adverse as in other parts. Love your blog. Cynthia

Hi, I would love to win a copy! I, too, am smitten with the quilt on the front!

Today's activities: I stay home with my three daughters ages 5, 2, and 4 months. Today was a little special. We went to the local nursery called The Greenery and bought some snapdragons, marigolds, and some veggies for our gardens. We managed to get a few planted today, but with 3 kids, it takes a little longer to get things in the ground than it used to. And we basically play all day since it's now in the 80's here:)

And as for what I'm doing today - I'm going shopping for some presents. Birthdays and mother's day. I'm not really looking forward to it as we're counting pennies and that kinda takes the fun out of it. Or perhaps I could see it as a challenge! A feat of creative purchasing! Yes, that makes it much more exciting. :P

I'd love to enter to win the book. What I did today was go to work and spend some time in the garden when I got home. Looked at my orchid plants in the yard which are growing well and should be in bloom in a few weeks. Thanks for the giveaway!

As your next-door neighbor, I was so disappointed when I saw the snow today! I scheduled catecract surgery and salivated over the quilts that I inherited. I read a quilt magazine (the first in almost 20 years) and dreamed of the fabric that I want to order! I was too p.o.ed to make soup (sounds wonderful), so we just had a refridgerated thing for supper.

Ok, so this is my first comment. I've been checking your posts and quilts for months now, and I made the around and around one last month. what am I up too? You mean beside being a mother of six, having made four quilts last month, and trying to beat the heat. I live in the tropics, and it's the hottest time of the year here, like in the 90s today. so, I am going to turn on the aircon, sit down and make eight tiny flowers to sew on top of a wheelborrow, part of a patchwork project to thank a good friend. and yes, I'd love to have that book!! Also, don't feel too blue about kids growing up, they get more interesting as they go along, well kinda. They keep changing everyday! so I hope you don't get anymore snow and I don't get any more heat! greetings from a Swiss in Thailand.

Today I am avoiding the pile of laundry by cutting out fabric for two quilts that I want to give to someone in need. It feels good to raid my stash for all the fabric except for what I will need for the backings.
I love the 1865 quilt, what an inspiration for the "modern" quilter.

Wow. That book looks great! I love history AND modern quilting!
Today, after a final rehearsal with my student's for their concert tomorrow, I got my kiddo (late) off the bus, am catching up on blogs, having dinner from a jar of deliciousness that we canned last summer, then working on my Goddaughter's 1st Communion quilt while supervising the teacher appreciation/(Grand)mother's day cards the kids making (strips & bits of cloth glued to card-stock in flower shapes). This makes it sound like my husband does nothing, but he's a rockstar who will help with all of this, then clean up and make lunches. Have a good one!

What am I up to today? Let's see...I ran my husband up to the airport at 4:30AM this morning. I came home and went down to the studio to stitch up my postage stamp blocks...all fourty-eight done. Then...I took a nap. Now I'm up for the post office and grocery shopping.

Oh I gotta do laundry too. Down to the, hmm, wedgie pair of undies which is no fun.

Today I weeded the asparagus patch and planted some violas, with more weeding in other parts of the garden of course. I am very grateful it is not snowing here.

I'm a day late in reading your post from yesterday. What a fabulous log cabin book! Yesterday I had the day off and I spent it with my 2-1/2 yr old Granddaughter. We did breakfast at McDonald's (for her), went to the quilt store (for me) and then we had a fun afternoon reading, coloring, singing and playing. Days like that don't happen frequently enough and it sure was a day to treasure.

The sun came out for awhile here today (Northwest Oregon), and I dug a big hole in which to plant our new apple tree. The chickens joined me, cheering me on and hoping for worms to be exposed.

I love this book, and if I am the lucky winner I will share it with the dear friend who taught me to quilt.

Hi, I've been checking out your blog on a regular basis now for about a month. I really loved your triangle pillow. I recently joined a block of the month class, so today I am going to make The Lost Ship block for my class. This book looks very interesting, and I especially love anything related to quilt history. Happy Quilting!

I seem to battling bronchitis (self diagnosed from WebMD). On the downside it means I probably have another week or two of coughing, and these things are usually viral. On the plus side I can stop gargling salt water and I have the hope it will be gone in a few weeks (no insurance and no doctor!). But I have work tonight- if it's not busy I can probably go home early! and yet.. I could use the money.
Anyways I am putting all that worrying aside and doing two things today: cleaning up the kitchen, and studying for my last exam tomorrow.

The book looks great, by the way, thanks for hosting a giveaway!

You didn't say when the giveaway ends, so I hope I'm within the timeline. I'll be going to the sewing room soon to start picking out fabrics for two quilt challenges I've entered. I've got to get to work on those things and just keep dragging my feet.

May 2 - A bank Holiday here in the Uk - and we went - Shopping! Sigh - and I think you must have the snow because we have had such a long run of unseasonably good weather here - it has even been hotter than Cairo at one point. In typical English fashion though, we are now worrying that this will be our "summer" and that July and August will be cold, wet and Windy (wait actually last year and the year before that was the case!)

Kristi said...

today i am cleaning up from a busy weekend and thinking about SUMMER. We seem to be skipping spring, snow again today!

Well this afternoon I have to go to my mother's house: she's renovating her kitchen and she's meeting with the contractor and I'm going to help her with the last design, electric appliances to chose etc... Last time I finished with a headache!
By the way, that is a beautiful book!
