a new WIP and a giveaway

Connecting Threads has a brand spankin' new fabric line called Matsuri. It's be-au-t-iful cotton lawn fabric. If you aren't sure exactly what cotton lawn fabric is, thankfully wikipedia knows! I had to do a little research myself. This fabric is so, so nice and the colors are wonderful!
The top left print in the block above is my absolute favorite! I was very curious to how it would sew up, since it is such fine fabric, but it sews up beautifully. I'm sashing it with plain white quilting cotton, and I'm happy to report that mixing the fabric weights is working very well. It's another thing I was curious about.

I'm using this tutorial by Ashley at film in the fridge. I think it compliments the fabric quite nicely....clean lines and perfectly sized pieces to show off the pretty prints. It's handy that I didn't have to do the math, either. Thank you, Ashley! :)
I was going to make it a lap size, as that seems to be my default size when it comes to quilt making. But about a week ago I was sewing with a few friends in the church basement. As I was working on my blocks they asked what size I was going to make the quilt. Heather, who's motto in quilting is "go big or go home", suggested I keep going. So....I'm now making this a king size. You gotta be careful who you ask advice from! When I showed my husband the photo, he said he really liked it. Works out well, since it will eventually be on our bed!
This is what I've got so far. (Please excuse the weird lines from the church basement floor.) I'm not excited to add all that skinny sashing in between, but it's going to be totally worth it! Right???

Now, for the giveaway! Connecting Threads is kindly offering up 3 fat quarter stacks of this beautiful fabric line to three of my readers. If you would like to win a fat quarter bundle, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment I'd like to hear what your default quilt size it. As stated earlier, I almost always make lap size quilts (60" x 72") if it's not for a specific purpose. I'm not sure why, it's just the way it is! I will pick the winners next Monday. The contest is open to US and Canadian residents only.

If you are curious about cotton lawn or if you would like a few tips about sewing with lawn fabric, Connecting Threads has a fact sheet that you can download here.

One more thing...my book is back in stock! Yay!

Happy Monday to you!

As a new quilted, I have only ever made things for specific uses. But my favorite has been crib sized. I'm not great at the quilting part but can't afford to send it out either. The one queen sized I did made me want to stab myself... ;)

I have been making twin size lately. Approx. 65 x 95. I'm trying to make one for each of my grandchildren.

Cassie said...

I seriously just got my connecting threads catalog today and was drooling over this fabric! I don't think I have a default size, I seem to go wherever the blocks take me....but I guess I aim for lap size most of the time :)

I tend to make lap size or baby quilts. I am fairly new to quilting and I am intimidated by anything much larger. I did make a top that is king size with my old college t- shirts, but I am so afraid to quilt it!.

I love your blog and I love this stack!!

Carrie L said...

As soon as I saw this line coming out, I knew I wanted some! It's so pretty! I haven't made enough quilts to have a standard--I've made a couple queen, a couple twin, and a few baby size.

Kathryn D. Duke said...

definitely a 60 X 76 or so...easier to quilt and also just a good size!! thanks for the chance to win!!

thanks for the give away, was wondering about the quality of CT fabrics. i just started making quilts last year, but managed to make 7. I dont have a default size, i follow a pattern so i just make what ever it tells me to :)

I almost always make twin size!

Judith said...

I make anywhere from lap size to full/queen, but more of the former than the latter. I'd like to make more of the larger sizes, but since I have to hand quilt, I find that limits the amount that I can accomplish. One of these days I'll get a machine that's amenable to quilting, and then I'll tackle a really big one.

Kathy Felsted Usher said...

I love Connecting Threads. I made my first order not too long ago and everything was perfect. I love this fabric and just got a new catalog today! I really haven't made a standard size quilt. I have one between twin and full and then one between a lap and a twin. I just depends on how big the borders get! Then I pick out the backing after I'm all done. Thank you for this opportunity!

trudys_person said...

I usually make lap-size quilts too ... I don't know why ... I think many patterns are this size and it is manageable if you don't have a specific bed or wall to put it on. Thank you for the giveaway!

Cindy said...

I've made various sizes of quilts but I think my most common these days is lap size. I'm currently working on a king size Curved Log Cabin for my daughter though. I love this new Matsuri fabric line...SO pretty! :)

B Greene said...

I usually go for a queen-size or a larger lap quilt. I like to really use the things I make! Thanks for the chance to win!

Erin said...

I generally have made baby quilts, so you know, baby quilt sized. I make them until they look big enough, how's that for scientific?

Pinspot said...

I don't have a default size since I am so new to quilting. But making one THAT big seems a little intimidating! Thanks for the giveaway!

TDJ said...

This really made me think. The last 3 quilts I finished were baby quilts but they were made for specific purpose. The first quilt I ever made was a king size, I over estimated how long it would take. I let the pattern and the quilt speak to me. My mantra is 'I sew by the seat of my pants' Unless I am sewing with a pattern I rarely have any idea how it is going to turn out. I just lay it out if it isn't big enough for my liking I just add more blocks.

Kim said...

Yes I think mine end up being around that size too....sometimes a bit bigger but mostly in 60 to 75 inch range.
Thanks for the chance to win some of the beautiful cotton lawn. That is the fabric I learned to sew on making my little peter pan collar blouses :0).
Way to go on the book! I am really enjoying my copy. I wish you continued success.

Diane Hitchens said...

My default size is around the same size your size, it just depends on the pattern :) I would love to quilt with the Lawn cotton. It sounds like a fabric with a lovely feel. I love to mix fabics that have differnt textures together in some of my quilts.

Asiyah said...

I almost always make crib or baby-sized quilts because I don't have the time, patience or attention-span for anything else!

Gotta love Connecting Threads...they are a recession-proof way for me to continue quilting.

I most often go for a lap sized quilt as well. I have been quilting my own quilts, and I think I've been afraid to go bigger for fear that I won't be able to get it into my machine!

Dandelion Quilts said...

Good question. I don't think I really have default, I make them all. Lol. What. Pretty a pretty quilt. Can't wait to see the sashing. I'd love to win,..I love connecting threads thread, use it all the time.

Jodie said...

Wow, I just received my magazine from them yesterday and was thinking that I really liked this fabric. I would love to win some to make a lap sized quilt to use in photos with my baby clients. If I don't win, I may just have to grab some. Thanks so much for sharing.

Marla said...

I'm a fan of smaller laps or throws because that is what I feel I can handle with my machine. I've never attempted anything any bigger, but my daughter would like me to make her one for her bed, so a twin is my next goal.

Allison said...

I fell in love with this collection as soon as I saw it in the catalog, but was hesitant because I've never used cotton lawn before. winning some would be a great way to try it out :) I'm with your friend, Heather. The bigger, the better! Thanks for the giveaway!

Michelle Jensen said...

I get on trends. First I tended to make table runners cause... well for a lot of reasons. Currently though it is king size because that is our bed and then for presents for others. It is quite something to make a few king sized quilts :) Thanks for the giveaway!!

April said...

I've only finished one quilt so far, but it and two of the others I have to finish are baby/toddler bed sized. I also have my 36 patch from your most recent QAL to finish, and that should come out lap sized. So it seems that I tend toward the smaller sizes right now. I was actually looking at this fabric on their website today for a twin sized quilt for my daughter! Thanks for the giveaway!

Bree said...

default is 60x72 here, too. Perfect for snuggling, but not too overwhelmingly large that you get tangled up in it!

Bailey said...

I like twin sized. It can be used sideways for a full, and two for a queen and makes a nice roomy lap quilt.

redheadedbaker said...

My default size seems to be about 65-70" x 80-90" (to maximize the width of the batting) As someone who is fairly tall, I fear two things - short pants and short quilts.

athleticquilter said...

I like to make queen/ king size quilts. Plenty of room to snuggle :)I. Thanks for a chance to win!

Little Pincushion said...

My default size is usually lap size, which for me varies in size. I usually follow a pattern or tutorial!

girleen said...

i usually always make lap-sized quilts; i quilt them myself unless its' something REALLY special, so the smaller size works for me. thanks for the chance, i was just looking at that fabric!

grapenutquilter said...

Default size for adults is queen/king, kids extra large lap and of course babies small lap so they can drag them around as toddlers!

emmy said...

I'm a new quilter and have made 3 quilts, 50 x 70 (we're not very tall), and one quilt 60 x 80 (for a taller person). I'm so glad you're using the lawn fabric from CT. The colors are wonderful.

Carrie said...

I don't have a standard size! I start following a pattern and then tweak and they end up all sizes! Wish I could leave out the tweaking, but I guess that is not my style! And I just purchased your book this past week and am IN LOVE! Thank you sooo much!

Joyce Carter said...

This fabric is absolutely beautiful! I have been drooling over it ever since I got the Connecting Threads catalog. Thanks for hosting the giveaway.
I usually make baby quilts, but I have made a few queen sized ones.

jan said...

Thanks for offering the opportunity to score some of this lovely fabric! My default size is in process of adjusting. I seem to end up with queen size quilts, more often than not. Not really practical, since we only have two beds in te house. And, how many quilts does each bed need? Not 10, I am discovering ...

Anonymous said...

usually make lapsize. I like to do my own free motion quilting and this is about all my machine can handle. I just saw this fabric in the Connecting Threads catalog I got today. It really caught my eye.

Nancy Near Philadelphia said...

I'm a lap or queen kind of gal and I'd love to enter your give-away.

Evelyn said...

I mostly make crib sized quilts because most of the quilts I make are baby gifts! I'm almost finished with the one and only king size quilt for our bed (What? Make something for myself?!), but it's thrown in the closet right now waiting to be bound. Yuck!

Vickie said...

I usually make baby quilts or lap size... things I can quilt myself. This fabric is beautiful! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

Michelle said...

Amanda Jean, I usually make toddler bed quilts. It is basically a crib-size quilt, but I add extra inches all around to cover a toddler .

I just ogled this line yesterday in the Connecting Threads magazine! I would LOVE to get a fat quarter bundle of this line.

Lately, my default quilt project has been twin or a baby quilt. Several new babies in my extended family. Love the fabrics.

Caitlin at Salty Oat said...

I don't think I've been quilting long enough to have a default size! I love making small baby quilts---they come together so quickly---but I've recently enjoyed making quilts large enough for beds. I love what you've done with the fabric so far. Ashley's tutorial is a good one; I used it to make a pillow and was super happy with the results.

Unknown said...

Lap size is my go to quilt choice, though I really need to challenge :)

I tend to lean toward 60x60 quilts. Nice and square. Don't know why, I just do. : )

Grace C. said...

Hi there -- new reader/follower chiming in! Thank you for the time and effort you put into your posts. I'm a fairly new quilter, and I am picking up so much knowledge and inspiration - it's almost overwhelming!

I've only got a handful of quilts under my belt so far, but the most common size is baby size, though I've done a couple of lap size quilts as well.

Shannyn said...

OOOH Pretty!! I have made a few king and queen sized quilts; but I think my default is prolly a lap sized quilt. Easier to FMQ under the machine.

Unknown said...

I'm a full size quilt girl unless it is a wedding present then it is a lap size so it'll get finished. Those colors are pretty.

What Comes Next? said...

I make a lot of baby quilts - 36" square usually, but after that they tend to be lap quilt size. I really like Connecting Threads fabrics - these bundles look gorgeous!

Johanna said...

I'm working on a lap size now and a queen/kingish size. My largest finish yet is only 30 inches though. My favorite tomake is a 12 inch for my table stand. I can see the end before I even start!

Barbara said...

My default size is about full.

Vjquilter said...

Usually I make a quilt about 72" X 72" and quilt it on my long arm frame!

L. C. Bryan said...

I have never seen a pattern like that before. I like! I'll look forward to seeing a photo if it all finished! I'm just getting back into quilting but I tend to lean towards the lap size. I guess I feel like I've accomplished more faster then if I did a queen or king size. But I couldn't picture doing the design you have any smaller. It wouldn't look as pretty. There's a nice mix of color as well which makes the design even more interesting.
I look forward to seeing the finished project!

Heather said...

I enjoy making quilts of all sizes. I LOVE it when I've finished a large bed size quilt. But the smaller ones, of course, are easier to quilt on a regular home sewing machine like mine.

Thanx for the chance to win!

Have a great week!

Shannon Wallace said...

I default (well, it's not a default for me...rather I am too scared to go much larger) to a lap size or a tablerunner or a mini! LOL I've only been quilting for about a year now, so I am just now gaining some confidence. However, since my dear hubby bought me an Amish bed off of Craigslist, I will have to make us a KING size quilt to cover it! Thank you for the giveaway...I like your quilt. :)

Sarah Craig said...

Oh it's such beautiful fabric, I had my eye on it, but was a little worried about sewing with it. I'm glad to hear from you that it sews up well! So I'd love love love to win some!!

And my go-to size is 60" square - small enough to quilt fairly easily on a tabletop machine, but large enough to cuddle under on the sofa!

Deb Robertson Writes said...

When my children were small I made small lap-sized quilts but as they got bigger my quilts have too. I really don't sew a specific size, just how the blocks and fabrics turn out, I would guess mostly a large single size.

Annessa said...

Ohhhh, I'm so excited! I love Connecting Threads-such good value and beautiful fabric. I had not seen this line; it's lovely!
I also make a lap size quilt for my default. It's perfect for one adult to snuggle up under, even on a bed or watching t.v. and just as handy for a kiddo to drag around. Bonus: easier to machine quilt than a queen/king!
Love your blog!

bethanndodd said...

The white sashing will definately be worth it! My default is also lap sizes quilts. For me, they are just big enough to cuddle up with but small enough to get finished up fairly quickly. Thanks for the chance! Smiles~Beth

I usually make lap size quilts. By the time I do the hand quilting I'm exhausted with anything larger. They make such nice gifts too. I just got the Connectng Threads catalog in the mail and spotted this fabric. Love the colors! Love - love how you combine colors in your quilts. Maybe we were sisters in a past life. You still keep inspiring me.

I don't really have a default size. It depends on who I am making it for, the pattern, or sometimes how much fabric I have. Thank you for the chance to win this beautiful fabric. Take care and God bless, Cory

Renea said...

I usually start out with a certain size in mind but then it always grows to a much larger size, which is usually about a queen size. I love Connecting Threads fabric and am really excited about this giveaway. Thanks!

Terriaw said...

That new cotton lawn fabric is gorgeous! I would love to make a skirt (or two) with some of those prints. Thanks so much for letting us know about this, especial in time to make new clothes for summer.

Cool idea for a giveaway. I think my typical quilt size is usually between a lap quilt and a full size, which works well on our full-size beds and our couches.

In Awe of Applique said...

I usually end up making barely-double bed sized quilts...queen size would be optimal, but the throat on my machine just isn't big enough to quilt anything bigger...though I've been experimenting with quilting 2 halves of a bigger quilt and then joining them...haven't finished one yet (I have 3 going at the moment) so I don't know if the technique works!

Almaelou said...

I like to make small child quilts because I can finish them quicker. Every time I make an almost bed size quilt I say never again but I usually end up starting another be dish size one and hoopoe I finish it

Jennifer D said...

My default size is a lap one, too. It's small enough to curl up in without drowning, yet large enough for some bed use.

I got their catalog in the mail today and was eying this line right away! It looks so soft and beautiful. Thanks for this chance!

Marti Parsons said...

Lap quilt but they are no larger than 45 X 48 because the are for wheelchair use and hospice patients. Love the fabric!!!

I don't really have a default size... but I'd say there's often 60-something inches in one of the edges. :)

Beautiful fabrics and WIP!

Kimberly said...

I don't have a default size. I am a super budget quilter (single mom, part time sub teacher), so I quilt with whatever fabric I have. I make it as big as it can be, and then love it for what it is. Usually, I have somewhere less than a twin bed, but more than a crib... and I really like to make my quilts square!

kristyn said...

I guess my "defult" quilt size is a lap quilt considering I have only ever made two quilts and both are lap size. The main reason I have defaulted to this size (well I guess there is two reasons) is that my machine has major fits with anything bigger and then there is the time issue. Since it takes me on average two years to complete a lap size quilt I am terrified of how long it would take for anything bigger ;)

Elisabeth said...

I find that I like to make in between a baby and a lap size, for some reason!

I love making crib/baby quilts. Just the perfect size, as far as I'm concerned. By the way, I like the way your quilt looks without the final sashing. I love this pattern, and I know just the fabric to use it for (baby quilt), and I might leave out that sashing...just saying.

hmm. Default size is probably about the size of a baby quilt-- that's what I prefer. Since I'm fairly new yet, I've only done a few (read that: 2 baby quilts and 2 twin sized quilts, with a 3rd on its way!!)I definitely prefer the ease of quilting the smaller size as opposed to the larger. Sheesh, and you're going to tackle a King Size!! WOW!

My default quilt size is also lap quilt size (around 60x65-70 or so). It seems like it's big enough too snuggle under, but not too big to quilt with a regular sewing machine. Thanks for the giveaway!

I just made my grandaughter an Easter dress made out of cotton lawn. I know the soft texture and love the fabric. My go to size is also a lap size quilt. I am funny with most of my quilts. I don't like them to be used as bedspreads because I don't want them to be abused. I put so much time and money into them and I treat them with kid gloves. Therefore, lap quilts can be snuggled in. I don't know...... but lap quilts are my favorites, next to baby ones.

I just finished a quilt and it's 80 x 80 and its the smallest one I've made, besides a couple of baby quilts. I tend to always make queen to king size ones. I send mine out to be quilted to a longarmer, so I like bigger quilts that can be used on a bed.
That fabric is beautiful.

I would love to win it! The only quilt I made so far is a baby quilt and since I have two more babies coming along it would be fun to make them one each too. :)

Jessica said...

I've only ever made BIG quilts! I think the last one was 95 X 95. Sure they take longer, but it's fun to get lost in a giant quilt. ; )

I just ordered your book Saturday! I mostly make quilts about 50" X 70" because I like that proportion, and it's a nice size for the veterans I make them for. Sharon - ssauser@dishmail.net

gorgeous fabrics! I love making queen-sized for some unknown reason.

Michelle B. said...

I definitely do not have a go to size. I just kind of make it til I feel like it's a good size and then call it quits!!

kristal said...

Wow lots of comments. My default size is king but then reality hits and i stop at full to a queen size. That fabrice is really prett. Well worth those tiny sashings.

Stephanie said...

I love this fabric... thanks for a chance to win it. When I started quilting I made baby size (for my kids & family members) then I moved up to twin, but it seems that I default to lap size now. I would like to make a larger quilt, but not sure I could handle quilting it on my machine.

eva said...

What a lovely quilt - as usual!!
No wonder your hubby likes it too.

I prefer a lap size quilt - so much easier to deal with......but i've made a couple of queen sized ones too, but those were meant for peoples beds....

Beautiful fabric! My go to size is similar lap quilts make me happy but I have done one king yikes!! I have another planned though am I crazy?

Stitching At Stone Cottage said...

I always make a single bed throw..i think it is because it can then be used on a bed, and its not too big for a lap/picnic rug...gorgeous fabric!

jimena said...

Love your WIP! I make Queen size quilts, mainly. Thank you!

Emily said...

I love 45 x 60ish sized crib quilts...they're quicker to make and my kids get something special from their mama! Sorainima (at) gmail (dot) com

'Manda said...

I generally make baby or lap size quilts. I have a short attention span and get bored with anything much bigger.

Tammy said...

Ooo, what a great giveaway. I too lie the lap size quilts; seems like a good universal size. Also, I like the 54x54 inchers; the square works nicely on point on a table.

Linda said...

Lovely fabrics and great Giveaway! I have never used this sort of fabric so it would be lovely to win so I could try. I often make cot quilts, sizes around 36" square or rectangular 40" x. 45" approx.

It indeed is lovely fabric. I had to look it up and then translate but it turned out to be the fabric sort I had in mind.
You have yet again made a lovely top. I am currently working on your "easy as pie" quilt which is rather a large one as I tend to make smaller ones.

pizzaeater said...

I haven't picked a default size yet. However, I will not do a king size quilt for a long time because I just finished one that took over a month just to do the top!

Jessica said...

oh! this fabric is beautiful!! I'd love some, and if I don't win, I'll go place an order.
your king size quilt will be stunning, and warm. I wish I had more large quilts with me here in Greece as it's really cold this spring!
anyway, my default quilt size is 65" x 90". Don't know how it happens, but all my quilts end up extra long. It's good though, a great couch size. Enough for the 3 of us to cuddle under or for my tall husband to nap with, hehe.

Unknown said...

That quilt is gorgeous!! I tend to like my quilts big enough for two to cuddle under so I like a good 75"x80" or there abouts. :) Thank you for the chance!

jeifner said...

I think in twin size quilts the most often. Ones that reach about a foot off of the floor. Although I'm working on a throw for the end of my bed that's about baby size.

Elisabeth said...

As I'm still fairly new to quilting I've sort of stuck to doll quilts and cushion covers so far. I'm hoping to make a quilt for my daughter's bed next though, so that will be a twin size.
Gorgeous fabrics! Thank you so much for the chance of winning them.

Heleen Groot said...

Yes, yes, yes. I would love to win the giveaway! My quilt size? As big as possible, I guess. My latest projects were all over 2 mtrs square. I love the feeling of a huge quilt resting on your lap while hand quilting.... Small just doesn't do it for me.... I've made them, sure. It just always feels like I should have added one more border!

Stacy said...

My default is between a lap and twin size. Longer and a little wider than a lap - to share with someone on the couch. Since I generally create my own patterns, I can size the blocks to fit what I want to do.

thanks for the giveaway!

Emily Day said...

I am totally in love with those fabrics! My default quilt sizs is crib sized (45x60). My brain is constantly working different ideas and plans so luckily crib sized comes together quickly. Thanks for the chance at a giveaway! Fingers are crossed!

Bethany said...

Wow.. I'm always so amazed in all the work that goes on a quilt. I've never made one but I am planning to do a really small one (receiving blanket sized... yes, very small), just a simple block quilt. Hopefully, it turns out well and straight (at least heheh). Thanks for doing a giveaway.

Jennie P. said...

Wow, that looks like a really cool quilt. I can't wait to see it finished. I prefer full or double quilts.

Kriza said...

I prefer smaller quilts, like 130x170 cm. Lovely fabric, thanks for the chance to win :-)

SewSealy said...

Beautiful quilt and gorgeous fabrics! My default is somewhere between a lap and twin. 60 x 80 seems about right... I do like them long enough to cover the toes! :)

RyanSarahN said...

I love connecting threads! Thanks for the giveaway. My go-to size is baby - since i'm a wimp and it's so easy! but also useful, there are always new babies that need quilts.

zarina said...

Mine is 80x90 inch but then since it does not sell well, its now down 45x45 inch.

Juli said...

I tend to stick with lap size quilts also, especially if I am just making a quilt because...

If I have a charity quilt in mind, they tend to be crib size.

Michala said...

I've just finished my second quilt (one baby, one lap). I'm desperate for more fabric and this is BEAUTIFUL! Think I'll be making another lap size next. And I might actually keep this one for myself!

Nelly Kelly said...

It seems like lately all I do is make baby quilts... But that's more to do with some kind of pregnancy contagion making the rounds of my friends than anything else! (it's the best kind of bug, if it is one!) thanks for the opportunity, this is really beautiful fabric!

Amy said...

It is gorgeous fabric. My go to size is the same as yours. I like it for the college quilts for my nieces and nephews.

Megan said...

Lap size or crib quilt, they come together so much faster.

jirons42 said...

I also make lap quilts as my default size but make everything up to king if I have a need. I almost never make wall size quilts

Mickey said...

I prefer to make my quilts a little bit smaller. Maybe 45" x 60".

New Salem Homestead said...

My go to size is usually a queen, king if it is for my bed. The biger the quilt, the more snuggly you can get in it! I would love to win the connecting threads fabric. It looks beautiful in the catalog but I can't touch it so I have been afraid to order it.

annemarie said...

I love baby size quilts - they are faster and easier.

yorkie mom said...

I use to quilt BIG. Now, I'm ok with with lap size. Thanks for a chance.

Anonymous said...

Default is definitely lap although with all the new babies in my family it definitely seems smaller lately :)

Lynn said...

I always make lap size. It's the thought of running anything larger thru my machine that scares me away!

Suzette said...

I have so been drooling over this fabric since I got the catalog--I would love to get my hands on a fat quarter stack! My default size is also lap quilt--that's the largest I can comfortable quilt myself on my DSM. Anything bigger goes to the logarmer.

Cindy said...

I love these colors and your pattern choice. My default size is baby quilts, I think more because I love babies and giving away quilts than the small size.

Heather said...

I also tend toward lap quilts - they are quick and versatile (can be given as a baby quilt in a second). Your new quilt is going to be gorgeous. I'm glad you've decided to upgrade its size.

lexiquilts said...

Thanks for the chance!! I am a lap quilt kinda gal, too! They just work up so quickly, and once I start a quilt I'm so anxious to see the finished product. I don't think I could make it through a king sized quilt with patience intact ;)!

My Old Quilting Soul said...

I have not finished many quilts since I am so new to this, but it appears that I lean towards twin or double sized quilts. I learn how to make a block and then make as many as brings me joy and when I put them together they are usually one of those two sizes :)

bee*in*the*balm said...

still learning so i've done a largish square one for our bed and a crib sized. hope to move up to twin soon!

Lori said...

GORGEOUS! My default quilt size is baby because I'm still very green at it and that is a safe size. :)

SarahZ said...

I wish I had a default size! It seems I've made more baby quilts than any other...36x36 or so, with several twins and squares, 60x60, thrown in. Thank you both for the beautiful fabric giveaway!

Michele said...

Right now my default size is small, only about 36x36. I like to make quilts about this size so I can make more of them and use as many different fabrics and color combinations as possible!

Sally said...

Love these!!!! I do a lot of baby quilts and "wall" quilts that seem to end up crib quilt size. I also do a lot of journal page (8 1/2 x 11-ish) art quilts. Thanks Amanda Jean!

Victoria Haveman said...

I typically make crib size quilts since my kids have been born but I am currently working on a twin size quilt for my oldest daughter. Then I'm back making baby quilts as I just found out we are expecting again!

LJ said...

First: I got your book as an Easter gift to myself and I love it!!

Second: My go-to quilt size is twin-60-65 by 85-90. This way it can be put on a twin bed or as a topper on a larger bed.

jenna said...

I usually make lap size. I would like to make bigger but I need a better machine first.

Leslie at the Sugarhouse said...

I have a short attention span! I love to start projects but it is a real chore to get something completed. I guess that is why I stick to small projects and baby quilts! I almost started a kingsize quilt for my bed because a fell in love with the fabric, I'm still thinking about it????
Thanks for your input on Connecting Thread's fabric.

QuiddityRox said...

I love this newest line of fabric from Connecting Threads. I've ordered only 3 times, and have been delighted with all of my materials. I didn't realize until today that I default to lap sized quilts mostly, although my work colleagues look forward to bridal pillows and baby quilts presented to them!!! I really just make enough blocks until I'm happy and have a rectangle, then finish it up. No two are the same!! I would love to make a quilt using the 'Laun" lawn fabric.

Vivian said...

Your timing is perfect---I just got their latest catalog in the mail yesterday and was wondering about this fabric.

My projects ask for a size based on what I want to do with them and how much effort is involved to make them. Some scream bed-size (for me queen), others only want or need to be wall or lap size and those vary depending on the design.

Sharon said...

I was just looking at those fabrics yesterday and loving them all! As for the size of quilt I like to stick through, I am working on one that is supposed to be 86 x 86 but I am getting frustrated because of the amount of room I have. So, I'm thinking I should go smaller. I have a table runner up next, so that will be a. Nice transition.

Nicole W said...

I'm new to the quilting scene, so my quilts are usually still pretty small. Lap size is probably my go to. I just finished quilt #3, however, it was the first one I ever pieced, quilted and bound myself. Usually I have them sent to be quilted. What a sense of accomplishment!
Amanda- Your binding tutorial helped me to FINALLY bind a quilt I had sitting around for almost 2 years! I feel like such a "real quilter" when I finally put in the last stitch on my binding. Works perfectly every time!

This fabric is beautiful!! Being a nanna to 11 wonderful grand kids I am always busy doing crib and lap quilts. 45 x 60. I can always know to look to you first for my creations because of the quality and wonderful colors you have:)

Evelin said...

Default quilt size ... since I have completed only 2 quilts, and am currently either working on 3 or 3&4 (should I put all those blocks together, or divide them and have two quilts to share??) I'd have to say I don't have a default size yet. Love the blog and love the giveaway!

Lawn was more common when I was growing up. I had some dresses and blouses made of lawn and my mother even made curtains out of it. About 35 years ago I made a lined skirt and matching peasant style blouse out of blue and pink floral lawn.
The majority of my quilts are made in 45 x 60 as donations to children's groups.

Colleen said...

My default right now is twin. I am making twin quilts for all my grandchildren. Then I will move on to queen so I will have wedding quilts for them. I am not a fan of king quilts since I quilt them myself on my domestic machine.
