giant pillow redux

My son turned 10 yesterday.
And it was a very good day.
I finished his giant pillow around 11pm on Saturday, a mere hour before his birthday. Come to think of it, I finished up his baby quilt at 11pm the night before his actual birth. Kind of a fun coincidence!
I'm happy to say that he absolutely loved it. He was never very far from it at any point during the day, so it was obviously a big hit. Hurray! (It matches his flock quilt nicely, too. Bonus!)
I love it too!!! The colors! The solids! The quilting! It all makes me so happy. I wish the zipper installation would have gone a bit better, but I'm sure it will withstand lots of use, even though it's not perfect. (By the way, yes, I am completely hooked on honeycomb quilting. No apologies!)
It's really hard to convey the size (36" finished) through photos, but here are the two giant pillows (my older son's pillow is on the right) on the couch for scale. They are ridiculously big and sooo fun!

My daughter already has requested one for her birthday, which is in two months. I don't mind a bit! My husband is happy that the monster sized roll of batting that I brought home last winter is finally getting put to good use. :)

Happy Monday to you!

Your honeycomb quilting...
Can you use the extra feeder on the machine?
I think we have the same sort of machine you and I and many more.

These are awesome! Reminds me of when I was a kid and we had two of these in the living room. Mine as a dull brown velvet like material -- not nearly as cool as yours. We loved them.

You stuffed the pillows with batting? More info please. ;)

Yes please, where did you get the pillows?? :) They look awesome! (my bday is December so you have a while ;)

beth and Nana-Bob,

yes! i stuffed the pillows with high loft (and extremely soft) polyester batting. my husband and i just pulled the batting apart into medium sized clumps and filled the pillow with it. then simply zipped it shut. with my older son's pillow I made my own huge pillow form, then made the zippered cover. Either way, the insides are removable, and the covers are washable. the pillow form is neater (less batting floating around) but the advantage of no pillow form is that I can add more batting at any time, as the stuffing compresses.

hope that helps!

I think we need some of these in our house!
I thought I remembered that you just bought a Janome Horizon (7700)? What stitch/settings did you use for the quilting?
My old Bernina had a great stitch, but I haven't found something I like as much on my 7700....but I also haven't tried very hard! (I think I played with #19 but I didn't change the settings much...)

I love it too. I especially like the honeycomb effect. I may try that out and I am thinking a big cushion like that might be good in my bedroom. I have a large cuddle chair.

AmandaJean,

I love it! It's a great, joyful, gift idea for preteens and teens. I'm happy to see you made use of the "honeycomb" again too.

I finished my Quilt-As-You-Go project from our class two weeks ago. I washed it and am LOVING the way it crinkled up and got softer. Thank you. If I have a chance, I'll stop by Riverside on a Thursday and show you. I'm very proud of it.

I love this!!!! I need to make 4 of them for my kiddos!! Our floor would be one giant cushion ;) Stupid question though - how did you fill them? Did you just fold the batting over and over to fit? Stuff it in? That probably wouldn't work though, then the pillow would not lay flat nicely. Hmmm. . . I've seen the huge bags of poly-fil at Joann's, would that work?

Oy! just saw your comment to another post. Sorry! Still love them :)

If we weren't moving in a few months, I would make a few of these. The size is perfect for movie and dinner in the living room. It is perfect for a 9-year-old to sit on for reading at home in her cozy spot. I keep coming back here to look both pillows. Now, I need learn how to pin this, so I can have a collection of to make, to sew! Thank you for sharing~ xc

It looks gorgeous. Happy Birthday to your son. My daughter (eldest child) turns 10 in August this year too. I think the picture of the 10 year old sitting on the pillow gives a good indication of how big it is!

i love these pillows so much! My mom made us big pillows when we were little and I remember just loving them! So you stuffed these with just batting?

These pillows are great! Definitely adding these to my To Do List I should be able to get to before my kids have their own kids. ;)

What a great pillow! Thanks for answering the question about the batting. I was wondering where on earth to find a 36" pillow form :)

I love these! I'll have to make some for my kids. I'm so happy to finally see a cool quilting stitch that I can actually try! (I have the same machine you showed in the link).
